Prologue

None of us knew our lives would turn out like this. No one foresaw it––dwelled on life’s what if's. But it happened. It just happened. Just as it happens, every day, to thousands of people, everywhere.

But like Mom says, what will be will be. This is life.

Chocolate Chocolate Cake

121409

My Grandma Reiter (my mom’s mom) was born on December 12th. She spent all of her 21st birthday in labor with her first child, my Aunt Lori. My grandma was absolutely determined to give Lori a day all to herself. So, with all of her might and will, my grandma battled Mother Nature. Come midnight on December 13th, she let off her last cannon.

It’s funny––their birthdays are still celebrated together. Normally, we do a family breakfast at Tualatin Country Club to celebrate. Not this year, though.

This year, Grandma and Aunt Lori came over to our house to celebrate with Mom. Just the three of them. A little Red Rose tea and scrumptious Chocolate Chocolate cake (made by yours truly). Simple but sweet.

The cake is from a recipe I’ve mastered, tweaked ever so slightly, and perfected to a perfect perfection (as far as my standards go). Cake has never fascinated me. But Mom really loves chocolate on chocolate cake, so I made this cake for her birthday last year. I’d never baked cake before. But it ended up turning out really well. So, I made it again for my dad’s birthday. He REALLY loves chocolate on chocolate cake.

Recently, a distant family member visited and brought miniature cupcakes for my mom. White cake with white frosting and confetti sprinkles. Surprisingly, Mom enjoyed them, thoroughly.

Mom was born on January 27th. That’s coming soon.
I’ll share a little secret... the Chocolate Chocolate cake was for her.
