Prologue

None of us knew our lives would turn out like this. No one foresaw it––dwelled on life’s what if's. But it happened. It just happened. Just as it happens, every day, to thousands of people, everywhere.

But like Mom says, what will be will be. This is life.

She Is Superwoman

82509

I hardly saw my mom today, but that’s okay. We were both very busy. Today was her first day of another radiation series. She will go in every day for the next three weeks with the exception of weekends. This evening she had a SHOC Foundation Empowerment Day Run & Walk recap meeting with the Empowerment Day committee members. This is one of the many events occurring throughout the year that my mom’s foundation puts on. The foundation is named for my mom––Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Foundation––SHOC for short. In just four years, the foundation has given a total of $172,000 to the Knight Cancer Institute’s Gynecologic & Reproductive Cancer Lab at the Oregon Health & Science University (a nationally renowned hospital). That’s not bad for a little foundation headquartered in Gladstone, Oregon and run by volunteers. No one gets paid.

This foundation is the good that came from the bad. It’s an amazing thing. My mom is an amazing person. For four years, she balanced teaching full time, running the foundation, and working her hat and accessories business, Hats of Empowerment, created to proceed the SHOC Foundation. Oh yeah, all the while playing the role of mom and wife. Superwoman? Pretty damn close. My mom is a stupendously positive and determined woman. She’s like Gert Boyle but refined around the edges.
